This "Youngtimer" Marin Hawk Hill mountain bike comes with an interesting history.
First it got upgraded.
Then it got converted.
And then it got rebuilt again.
Upgrade:
The mountainbiker purchased this Marin Hawk Hill brand new in the 1990s. Then, during the mid '00s, the steel bike required a major upgrade. It got - again - equipped with a derailleur drivetrain and partwise, original bike parts from the '90s. Such as Sachs Neos derailleurs, Sachs Neos wheels with Ritchey Rock 415 E rims and the legendary Suntour XC-Pro Micro Drive crankset with original Suntour MD chainrings. Furthermore, quality rim brakes got mounted: the Magura HS33 in the front and rear.
Conversion:
Shortly after we took over the Rohloff distribution in 2010, the cyclist started thinking of drifting away from the constantly demanding-maintenance of the derailleur option, towards the low maintenance and constant precise shifting IGH: the Rohloff Speedhub 500/14.
After processing and doing his maths he asked for the conversion of his customized Marin bike.
I built his Rohloff wheel and re-used the light Ritchey Rock 415 E rim, installed it together with the reliable Rohloff Chain Tensioner, the elegant Rohloff Chain Guide CC, a new CNC-machined BBB-chainring and the long lasting Rohloff S-L-T 99 8-speed bicycle chain. Yes, back then the legendary Rohloff chains were still available and for a bit more economical prices.
The Rohloff gear, together with the Suntour crankset and Maguras made this "Youngtimer" a proper MTB - over 10 years after beeing produced originally.
Rebuild:
In 2018 the owner had to let his beloving Marin go.
He announced his coming and we expected that he would just drop by to let the bike for the annual bike check (inspection of the complete bike and wheels + Speedhub oil change) and - like always - for a coffee and Mummu's pulla. But instead, he offered his ride for sale.
At the same time another cyclist from Lahti, southern Finland, payed us a visit and he liked the bike right away - so he bought it.
The "Lahti cyclist" is "strongly built" and therefore he had to have stronger wheels. The best choice for him was a pair of legendary Ryde Andra 30 with CSS (Carbide Super Sonic) rims. After all further details were discussed, action was taken and the re-build could start.
In the picture album you can see details of this long lasting Marin Hawk Hill steel bike as well as the complete ride.
The rebuilt Rohloff Speedhub wheel comes with hub flange support rings and the solid RYDE Andra 30 CSS rim.
Attention: Since he wanted his new bike yesterday, we borrowed him the Hope Mono with RYDE Andra 30 CSS front wheel until his new wheel got ready.
