We have converted a Pelago Stavanger Commuter for a customer in the Helsinki area (Finland), into a shiny, fast rolling randonneur bicycle.
Pelago Bicycles is a young bicycle producer located in Helsinki, Finland. Pelago is known for making affordable steel bikes with classic designs.
The student purchased his Pelago Stavanger some months earlier and was unhappy about the drivetrain wear of its derailleur gears and the resulting maintenance expenses.
So the young man contacted us and asked for assistance in converting his - still "like new" - ride. He had heard, that there is a reliable, inexpensive, durable and super fast shifting gear system for bicycles available: The Rohloff Speedhub 500/14.
He realised, that maintaining his current derailleur gear system would get expensive over time. So instead of wasting money with a non-durable derailleur drivetrain, he decided to invest some money in a major upgrade.
With the conversion of his like-new bike towards the inexpensive and high performance Rohloff Speedhub, he can expect more enjoyable cycling experience and the TCO will be much lower than with a derailleur gear option.
As the overall riding experience is important to him, he wants to avoid doing more than an annual inspection or the 5.000km (once or twice a year) oil change. Even though an TS OEM2 axle plate can be used in this Pelago bike frame, the customer asked for the long torque arm. He doesn't want to bother doing any chain wear compensation by himself. He wants it to happen automatically. Customer's wish is our command - and we have a timeless and elegant solution to make it happen: The Rohloff Chain Tensioner and the Rohloff Chain Guide CC.
The solid Rohloff Chain Tensioner was attached in the rear derailleur hanger which takes care of the chainwear compensation and ensures consistent tension. To prevent the bicycle chain from falling off the chainring, the reliable Rohloff Chain Guide CC found its place at the lower seat tube.
To be able to carry some load, a Tubus rear rack was mounted. Since the client wanted to keep the dropbar which came originally with the bike, a Thorn extension bar was installed to host the Rohloff lightweight twist shifter.
Once all the details of the conversion were defined and agreed upon, the Wheel Station got started with building the wheel.
