Spoke hole pattern

Bicycle rims are available with different spoke hole patterns. The spoke hole pattern is important when re-building a wheel with a used hub. In order to separate these spoke hole - or nipple hole - patterns, they are defined by different names.

Most commonly used were "French-" and "European-" spoke hole patterns.

We simply just call them "F1" or "F2".

We renamed them because you can find the terms "French-" and "European-" spoke hole pattern used with both of the spoke hole pictures. With the usage of completely new terms we avoid confusion. This makes it easy to purchase the correct rim with us

In order to help you selecting the right one your hub needs we pictured some rims and explain them on this page.

F1 and F2 spoke hole pattern

On this picture we have both spoke hole pattern next to each other. Both are RYDE Andra 210 rims but with different spoke hole pictures.

The left rim, the "F1", has the first spoke hole - next to the valve hole - drilled on the left, when looking from the hub in riding direction.

The right rim, the "F2", has the first spoke hole - next to the valve hole - drilled on the right, when looking from the hub in riding direction.

Sometimes a second look is required to recognize the correct spoke hole pattern. The RYDE Andra 210 is a good example as it is a narrow rim where there isn't much space for the valve and nipple holes.

The design of the spoke hole picture is easy to make out in this photograph. This fat bike RYDE HL 80 rim has a F2 spoke hole picture.

Some fat bike rims come even with 64 or 72 spoke holes. In that case you have the option to lace the wheel with the F1 or F2 spoke hole pattern.
