Bicycle rim spoke hole patterns.

I had extensive discussions with the bicycle industry during the summer 2016. It was about the definition of spoke hole patterns in bicycle rims.

Common terms were "French spoke hole pattern" and "European spoke hole pattern". (Is France not a part of Europe?)

It seemed, that everybody named the nipple hole patterns like they wanted and both terms were used in both cases. It could easily happen, that when ordering a bicycle rim with French spoke hole pattern from your supplier, you received a rim with European spoke hole pattern.

I see that things have changed this year. For us important bike part manufacturers seem now to speak one language. Now if you find a rim with the European spoke hole pattern in the description of Rohloff, the same spoke pattern has the same term with RYDE. Even the user manuals have been transcribed.

But, we'll still find different definitions for the same spoke picture in the future, because the old documentation is still out there, as well as online. All this may lead to unhappy surprises.

From now on we use different terms for the spoke hole patterns: "F1" and "F2". With the usage of these new terms we want to avoid foreseeable confusion.
